VA Automobile Adaptive Equipment Program:  This provides equipment and training to permit a veteran or serviceperson whose disabilities were as a result of injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service to enter, exit and/or operate a motor vehicle or other conveyance.

A non-service connected veteran or active military service person may also be eligible for this program but will only be provided equipment to safely enter and exit the vehicle. 


Qualify/Qualified:  A veteran or serviceperson must possess one of the following disabilities as a result of injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service:

  • loss or permanent loss of use of one or both feet, or
  • loss or permanent loss of use of one or both hands, or
  • permanent impairment of vision in both eyes with a central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with corrective glasses, or central visual acuity of more than 20/200 if there is a field defect in which the peripheral field has contracted to such an extent that the widest diameter of visual field has an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees in the better eye.

Auto Allowance Grant:  This is a one time (once in a life time) allowance in the amount of $18,900 to purchase a new or used vehicle that is authorized by the VA.  The payment of the grant will be made to the seller of the vehicle.  The payment cannot be made to the veteran or serviceperson.  The form VA21-4502 must be submitted for approval to the VA before the purchase of the vehicle. i.e. a wheelchair accessible VMI Mini Van.
