Gala Honors Leadership

Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) held its annual Americana Gala at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC this week.
With the theme Building a Better Tomorrow, the event paid tribute to visionary individuals and corporate leaders who have championed improved quality of life for all veterans and people with disabilities-improvements that include an accessible barrier-free America and better access to job-seeking tools and employment opportunities.
“Imagine an America where veterans with disabilities and their families have everything they need to thrive. Through their leadership, the people and businesses we honor tonight are helping Paralyzed Veterans make this vision a reality,” said Paralyzed Veterans’ Acting Executive Director Homer S. Townsend, Jr.
Our great nation is home to 25 million brave veterans and 51 million people with disabilities-with 11,000 new spinal cord injuries reported annually. Paralyzed Veterans works 24/7 to create an America where veterans’ benefits and health care are fully funded; where everywhere is barrier free for everyone; where wheelchair sports are mainstream; and, where our scientific community is amply funded to strive for new treatments and cures.
This year’s honorees are:
- The Honorable Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Secretary of Labor, who received the 2007 Honor for Public Service for her enduring service and her advocacy for the veteran community;
- The Honorable James Langevin, U.S. Congressman (RI), who received the 2007 Congressional Award for his long-time support of both the Paralyzed Veterans of America and all veterans;
- The Honorable Max Cleland, former U.S. Senator (GA), who received the 2007 Patriotic Award for his enduring advocacy for veterans with disabilities;
- Mr. Michael Graves, FAIA, Michael Graves & Associates, who received the 2007 Health and Design Award, for his current efforts to maximize the independence of people with disabilities and his leadership and innovation in the creation of quality medical devices; and
- UPS, which received the 2007 Award for Corporate Leadership, for its enduring advocacy for veterans and all people with disabilities.
Proceeds from the gala will benefit Paralyzed Veterans, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, congressionally chartered veterans service organization. For more information, visit www.SupportVeterans.org.
