Paralyzed Veterans of America Provides Accessible Home Design Solutions

For those whose mobility is impaired, the most mundane features of a residence can represent an insurmountable obstacle. Accessible Home Design: Architectural Solutions for the Wheelchair User, Second Edition offers innovative yet practical solutions for achieving independence.

The authors, Thomas D. Davies, Jr., AIA, and Carol Peredo Lopez, AIA, have collaborated with hundreds of wheelchair users on home modification via their work at the Paralyzed Veterans. They have dealt with many common problems and have developed design solutions that have addressed each client's accessibility needs.

While the book will serve as an ideal resource for homeowners with disabilities and their families, the book’s technical information will provide important insights on home design and construction for builders and architects, as well. In addition, the book conveys how to design an accessible project. It includes descriptions of wheelchair users’ techniques for performing daily activities such as opening a door or transferring into a shower. On the other hand, technical information takes the form of design details (such as recommended knee-space heights or door widths) or material characteristics (wheelchair travel over crushed oyster shell paths, for example).

Co-author, Carol Peredo Lopez's interview with Health and Home Report, a monthly news magazine television program, airs during the month of November. The three minute spot discusses the content of the recently published,  Architectural Solutions for the Wheelchair User, Second Edition. Among the topics covered by the book are "Adding Elevators or Lifts," "Choosing the Right Doors," and "Outdoor Rooms and Paths."
