Paralyzed Veterans of America Thanks Invacare Corporation for Its Support of the 2010 National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Washington, DC— Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) proudly announces that Invacare Corporation, headquartered in Elyria, OH, will serve as the National Host Sponsor for the 30th National Veterans Wheelchair Games, to be held in Denver, July 4-9.

“Invacare is an active supporter of our nation’s military veterans and is extremely proud to support them by sponsoring the 30th National Veterans Wheelchair Games,” said Mal Mixon, chairman and chief executive officer, Invacare Corporation. Mixon is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, and attained the rank of captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. “Invacare’s mission is ‘Yes, you can®’ and that mission in embodied by the athletes participating in the Games.”

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games, presented by Paralyzed Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), are open to all U.S. military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, certain neurological conditions, amputations or other mobility impairments. The VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System and the Mountain States Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America are hosting the 2010 Games.

Veterans at the Games will compete in 17 events, including swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, archery, air guns, basketball, nine ball, softball, quad rugby, bowling, handcycling, wheelchair slalom, power soccer, a motorized wheelchair rally, track and field and trapshooting. Kayaking will be an exhibition event this year. Athletes compete in all events against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age. For more information about the Games, go to www.pva.org/2010Games.

ENDS

Sixty-four years ago, Paralyzed Veterans of America was founded by a band of spinal cord injured service members who returned home from World War II to a grateful nation, but also to a world with few solutions to the challenges they faced. These veterans from the “Greatest Generation” made a decision not just to live, but to live with dignity as contributors to society. They created an organization dedicated to veterans service, medical research and civil rights for people with disabilities. And for more than six decades, Paralyzed Veterans of America and its 34 chapters have been working to create an America where all veterans, and people with disabilities, and their families, have everything they need to thrive.
