Golf Open Raises Resources for Paralyzed Veterans Jobs Program

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Belle Haven Country Club was the site for the third annual Paralyzed Veterans Golf Open held on Monday, May 24, 2010. Veterans and leaders from business, government and the armed services took to the fairways, raising over $330,000 for a great cause—an innovative program that’s empowering veterans with disabilities with the help they need to get good jobs and careers in a tough economy.

Thanks to founding sponsor Agility Defense & Government Services, 100 percent of the event proceeds went directly to Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program. To date, the program has helped empower hundreds of veterans with disabilities—many of whom are veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In fact, two program participants are now earning more than $100,000 annually.

“It’s great to take to the greens for a good cause—and there can be no cause that is more timely than helping seriously wounded veterans get good jobs and develop careers in a difficult economy,” said Paralyzed Veterans of America National President Gene A. Crayton. “Hiring more veterans represents a great deal for our country. Those who have served, secure good careers. Employers get great employees. And, in turn, our economy becomes stronger.”

Jonathan Karl from ABC News served as master of ceremonies. Also in attendance: Vince Papale, former Philadelphia Eagle and the inspiration for the movie, “Invincible.” Other attendees included GEN Peter W. Chiarelli, vice chief of staff, U.S. Army; and MG Dan Mongeon, USA (Ret), President & CEO, Agility Defense & Government Services.

Paralyzed Veterans has opened four vocational rehabilitation offices: Richmond, VA; San Antonio, TX; St. Paul-Minneapolis, MN; and Long Beach, CA. A fifth office, in partnership with Agility Defense & Government Services, will open in Augusta, GA, by the end of the year.
